MCC Announces Speaker for 51st Commencement Exercises
Dr. Pamela Trotman Reid, president of the University of Saint Joseph, will speak at Manchester Community College’s 51st Commencement ceremony.
Dr. Reid became the eighth president of University of Saint Joseph in 2008. Since that time she initiated and launched the institution’s first professional doctoral program by creating a school of pharmacy in downtown Hartford. The size of the graduate program in education tripled under her leadership. In addition, the program for adult learners was refocused and undergraduate women’s programs have gained increased recognition for excellence and student success. Dr. Reid announced her retirement from University of St. Joseph, effective June 30 of this year.
She has received a number of honors including being named among the 100 most influential African Americans in the state of Connecticut. She currently serves on the boards of the MetroHartford Alliance, the iQuilt Project for Downtown Hartford and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. She is board chair of both the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges and the Hartford Consortium for Higher Education.
She is nationally known as a scholar in the area of gender and racial issues and also as an active participant in scholarly organizations. A fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), she has held elected offices in that organization. She was named among the 100 distinguished women in psychology by the APA in 1992 and has received national awards, including the Distinguished Leadership Award.
Dr. Reid is a developmental psychologist who, throughout her career, has enhanced academic quality and promoted diversity. Among the projects she developed, she is most proud of a math and technology enrichment program for middle school girls that continues to operate in Detroit.
She holds a bachelor of science degree from Howard University and a master’s degree from Temple University. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Pennsylvania. She has more than three decades of faculty experience in psychology, education and women’s studies at diverse institutions, and has held administrative roles at the City University of New York Graduate School, the University of Michigan and Roosevelt University.
MCC’s Commencement exercises will be held on Thursday May 28, at 5:30 p.m. at the Bicentennial Band Shell on the campus lawn. Additional information can be found on the website.
