National Association of Veterinary Technicians Certifies MCC Program
The National Association of Veterinary Technicians (NAVTA) has awarded eligibility for certification to Manchester Community College’s Veterinary Assistant program. The program is the first approved in Connecticut and one of only 23 in the country. National certification will allow students to sit for the national exam to become an Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA) upon successful completion of course work.
“This nationally recognized endorsement highlights the well-rounded education students receive through the approved Veterinary Assistant program. The comprehensive skills set a student learns from their course work is a testament to the added value of entry-level assistants to local veterinary hospitals and clinics,” Diane Mitchell, program coordinator for Allied Health programs at MCC, said. The nationally recognized certification will allow graduates to work anywhere in the country.
Veterinary assistants certified by NAVTA are endorsed by the high level standards of the organization, whose mission is to certify professionals capable of the competent and humane treatment of animals. MCC has partnered with Bolton Veterinary Hospital, a 24-hour, American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)-accredited hospital providing comprehensive medical, surgical and dental care for animals.
“This program is designed as an introduction to working in the veterinary field. Students will be qualified to practice the skills needed by a veterinary practice,” Erin Jackson, an instructor for the program and Veterinary Technician at Bolton Veterinary Hospital, said.
The first group of students is expected to graduate from MCC’s NAVTA certified Veterinary Assistant program in early May. Employers are encouraged to contact the program coordinator with open positions or opportunities for student internships.
