24th Annual Global Issues Conference: Understanding Social Media And Global Change
Manchester, Connecticut – (October 9, 2013)… In the 21st century, the lens through which we engage each other and the world around us is no longer primarily unmediated. News production and consumption, political campaigning, cartography, disease tracking, advertising and the family cat have all moved into distributed social spaces more frequently located in the cloud than on the ground. For this reason, “Understanding Social Media and Global Change” has been selected as the theme for the 24th Annual Global Issues Conference at Manchester Community College. The conference will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the SBM Charitable Foundation Auditorium at MCC.
The conference will feature experts in the field, including Dr. Sundeep R. Muppidi, Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Hartford, where he teaches courses in new media, television production, multimedia production, international communication and research methods, and Leigha Baugham, Global Social Media Manager for 360i, a digital advertising agency, and Coca-Cola’s Global Connections team, based in Atlanta, Georgia.
The conference will also feature breakout sessions on the topics of War, Radicalism, and Revolution: Social Media’s Impact; Surveillance, Privacy and Free Speech in Social Media; Social Media and Television: Historical Perspectives and Change over Time; Social Media: Creating Active and Engaged Communities Online; and Social Media and the Business World.
The conference is free and open to the public.
In 2013, the Global Issues Conference at Manchester Community College will mark its 24th year, when the college is celebrating its 50th year. The Global Issues Conference began as a grass roots effort to improve the understanding of international issues, critical to world peace, by presenting a free program of distinguished, internationally known speakers to the public. The conferences provide a forum to introduce and examine topics such as economics, politics and religion, and serve to promote peaceful relations by encouraging awareness and appreciation of cross-cultural diversity.
Funded, in part, through the John Tirinzonie Scholarship Fund, the MCC Foundation and the MCC Cultural Programs Committee. Presented in partnership with Free Speech Week.
Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College.
