Students of MCC Course Get Discount Tickets to Hartford Symphony

A new partnership between Manchester Community College and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) will enhance appreciation of upcoming HSO concerts, and students who complete an upcoming course at MCC can buy tickets to performances for $10.

The course, offered through MCC Credit-Free Programs and taught by Jeffrey Martin, HSO director of community engagement and education, will be held Wednesday, May 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MCC campus (refer to CRN 12175 for registration). It is designed to accompany the HSO performances of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and the “I Got Rhythm” Variations; and Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 6, at The Bushnell Performing Arts Center in Hartford May 9 through 12. The course fee is $25.

“This educational course will provide a deeper understanding of the life and works of George and Ira Gershwin, and Vaughan Williams,” according to MCC Director of Credit-Free Programs Ann Bonney. “The course features an in-depth study of the pieces that will be performed; and a working model and appreciation for connecting jazz and classical music.”

The normal ticket price without the discount is $35 to $68, so even with the MCC course fee factored in, students get a significant discount. For more information about the concert, visit: Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

MCC Credit-Free Programs also offers other music courses designed to develop students’ musical talents and appreciation. Drum Set: Master Class, for example, starts May 2 and runs four consecutive Thursdays through May 23, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. (refer to CRN 12001 for registration). The course fee is $90.

Also offered is Music Recording, Publishing, Marketing and Publicity, Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (refer to CRN 12197 for registration). The course fee is $45
