MCC Culinary Arts Students to Participate in The Bread Bakers Guild of America Open House
Manchester, CT – (October 4, 2012)…Manchester Community College will be one of over fifty participants in The Bread Bakers Guild of America’s Second Annual Guild-Wide Bakery Open House on Saturday, October 20. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the kitchen of the Culinary Arts Center located on the second floor of the Lowe Student Services Center.
Guild member bakeries in 27 states and three Canadian provinces will take part in the open house. MCC is one of only two places in Connecticut and the only community college to participate in the open house event. The Guild’s open house was conceived as a way to bring communities to their bakeries, as well as to champion the cause for locally made bread.
John Gibson, artisan bread maker and MCC instructor, says, “We’re very excited about participating in The Guild’s Bakery Open House and joining forces with Guild members in so many different places. We hope that the MCC community will be able to join us in this celebration of artisan baking.” At MCC, the open house will include student demonstrations on how to make bread, and opportunities to sample a variety of artisan breads, ask questions about bread making techniques and take a tour of the MCC culinary facilities.
The award-winning Hospitality Department of Manchester Community College offers students a choice of degree and certificate programs in the area of culinary arts, foodservice and hotel-tourism. Both the Culinary Arts and Foodservice Management associate of science degree programs have been granted exemplary status by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACFEF). MCC is the only postsecondary school in New England to receive this distinction, which is a guarantee to students that their program has met or exceeded the standards set by the ACF Accrediting Commission and the foodservice industry.
Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. The Bread Bakers Guild of America is a nonprofit organization comprised of professional bakers, farmers, millers, suppliers, educators, students, home bakers, technical experts, and bakery owners and managers who work together to support the principle and the practice of producing the highest quality baked goods. It was formed in 1993 to shape the skills and knowledge of the artisan baking community through education.
