MCC to Offer Credit-Free Course on Connecticut’s Sales and Use Tax
Manchester, CT – (September 19, 2012) … Manchester Community College is offering a credit-free course to help people understand all the changes in Connecticut’s sales and use taxes. The 2-1/2-hour course is being offered twice during the college’s fall term: Thursday, October 4, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. (for registration refer to CRN#31966); and Tuesday, December 4, also from 6 to 8:30 p.m. (refer to CRN #31987). The fee is $45 and pre-registration is required.
Taught by Sanjeev Khurana, senior auditor for the State of Connecticut’s Department of Revenue Services, this seminar is for the general public and businesses including retailers, wholesalers, nonprofits, contractors, sub-contractors, service providers, and manufacturers who need to be aware of the laws and regulations affecting the collection of these taxes.
“It is so important for small business owners to know if the services they provide are taxable or not,” Khurana pointed out. “There have been cases in which businesses were billed for the taxes on services they had provided to Connecticut businesses as they omitted to collect Connecticut sales and use taxes. For example, painters’, carpenters’ or electricians’ services are taxable when provided to commercial or income-producing properties, and are not taxable when provided to homeowners. However, services like landscaping services are taxable to both commercial and income producing properties as well as to the homeowners.”
To help increase awareness of requirements and how to meet them, Khurana will cover the rules applying to new businesses, current sales tax laws, which services are taxable, and the common exemptions. The course will also give students information on valuable tax guides, various important tax publications, as well as tips on how to file business taxes using the Department of Revenue website.
Khurana earned his bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Delhi. He has more than 25 years of working experience with the Deptartment of Revenue Services conducting highly complex sales and use tax field audit examinations of large-size corporations in and outside of Connecticut as a sales and use tax specialist.
