Manchester, CT (September 10, 2012)… MCC on Main, Manchester Community College’s Arts and Education Center, has scheduled the following events for the months of September and October.

September 13 – MCC on Main Grand Opening Fundraiser: Pre-opening Wine and Champagne Reception: Charles Cheney Mansion, 5:30 p.m. Dessert Reception, Art Show and Sale. September 19 – Urban Storytellers Featuring Tracy Caldwell: Tracy “Mind.Evolution”. Caldwell is a spoken word artist who writes and is inspired by, not only her own struggles, personal and social, but also the struggles of women as a whole. Born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut this single mother finds and gives hope through her performances. Currently she is the director of the one woman stage play “Wide Open” and founding creator of “The Thick Chronicles: A Body Image Story”. September 20 – Mishi-maya-gat Spoken Word & Music Series: At 7:00 p.m. Kaleidos, with Yovianna Garcia, classical guitar, and multi-percussionist Sayun Chang. Yovianna Garcia earned a master of music degree in classical guitar performance at the Hartt School of Music and teaches in Hartt’s Community Division, the Music and Arts Center in West Hartford, the Community School of the Arts at UConn, and at her own private guitar studio. Sayun Chang has collaborated with Taiwanese indigenous dance groups and performed in international folk festivals throughout Turkey, Greece, Canada and Hungary. She is a doctoral student at The Hartt School, where she studies orchestral percussion and multiple-hand drumming. She received her master’s degree from The Hartt School.

Beginning at 8:00 p.m. – Featured poets Marilyn Nelson and Michael Palma. Marilyn Nelson, CT’s former State Poet Laureate, Professor Emerita of English at UConn, and 2012 winner of the Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of America, has a new poetry collection, Faster than Light: New and Selected Poems, due out from LSU Press in 2013. She is also founder and director of Soul Mountain Retreat, a small writers’ colony in East Haddam. Michael Palma’s new poetry collection is Begin in Gladness (Star Cloud Press, 2011), as well as the 2008 online chapbook, The Ghost of Congress Street. He is also an award-winning translator of Italian poetry, including the work of Dante and Guido Gozzano and co-edited the anthology, New Italian Poets, named one of ten Outstanding Translations of the Year in 1991. September 27 – Gallery Reception: MCC Fine Arts and Alumni Exhibition: An exhibition of work by MCC Fine Arts Faculty will be the inaugural show in the gallery. These professional artists will give a sense of the wide-ranging possibilities present in the world of art today. The exhibition will help grow the partnership between MCC and the downtown and surrounding community. October 5 – Books to Film Series, featuring: The Woman in Black by Susan Hill: In London, lawyer Arthur Kipps still grieves the death of his beloved wife Stella on the delivery of their son Joseph four years ago. He is assigned to travel to the remote village of Cryphin Gifford to examine the documentation of the Eel Marsh House that belonged to the recently deceased Mrs. Drablow. Arthur goes to the isolated manor and soon he finds that Eel Marsh House is haunted by the vengeful ghost of a woman dressed in black. Stars Daniel Radcliffe. 95 mins. Thriller/Horror. Rated PG-13. October 6 – Main Street Saturday Storytelling: Local storyteller Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti from East Hartford will be presenting a three-week “Gumbo Soup” series of African American and Choctaw folktales for all ages starting on October 6. October 24 – Urban Storytellers Features Brenda’s Child: Brenda’s Child, born Latoya Bosworth, has made it her life’s mission is to inspire people through poetry and stories and through leading by example with courage, confidence, and integrity. Her poetry is currently featured in the Pen&Ink column of the community newspaper, An African American Point of View. In April of 2007, Brenda’s Child self-published her first book of poetry entitled A Piece of My Mind…Poetic Confessions of a Self-Proclaimed Diva. Brenda’s Child is also a columnist for Lioness Magazine, a special education teacher, and founder of the mentoring program “Keep Youth Dreaming and Striving”.
