MCC Receives Jarvis Trust Gift

Manchester, Connecticut-( March 20, 2012)…The college recently received a $333,333 gift from the Jarvis Trust. This is an unrestricted gift to the Manchester Community College Foundation and will be used to advance strategic initiatives at the college, including MCC on Main, the arts and education center in Downtown Manchester. This is the second gift to the college from the Jarvis Trust.

Dr. Gena Glickman, President of Manchester Community College said “This generous gift from the Jarvis Trust is much appreciated by the entire college community. Part of the Jarvis Trust gift will be used for an arts and education center, the college’s downtown Manchester initiative, which will provide an economic boost for small businesses on Main Street and create a college-town environment for the community.”

Alexander and Alice Jarvis were prominent real estate developers in Manchester. As a realtor, contractor and property developer in the town for many decades, Alexander Jarvis constructed hundreds of the post-World War II cape cod-style houses. Additionally, many of the town’s first shopping centers and the Main Street construction of the 1940’s were Jarvis hallmarks. The initial bequest from Mrs. Jarvis to Manchester Community College in 2006 was instrumental in funding the renovation of the Culinary Arts Center and was the largest single gift from an individual ever received by the college. The main dining room in the Culinary Arts Center was named in memory of Alice and Alexander Jarvis.

The generous gift made to Manchester Community College touched nearly every area of the college including student support services, academic programs, community activities and college facilities .In 2009 Alexander and Alice Jarvis were inducted into the MCC Foundation Hall of Fame for their past generous gift.

MCC on Main is located at 901 Main Street and will house an arts and education center coordinated by Manchester Community College. The building was a gift from First Niagara to the Town of Manchester and included a $500,000 unrestricted grant over 5 years to the MCC Foundation. The MCC on Main center is expected to open in May, 2012.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College.
