MCC Receives National Recognition for Community Service

Manchester, CT-(July 5, 2011)… Manchester Community College has been honored as a leader among institutions of higher education for its support of volunteering, service learning, and civic engagement. The college has been admitted to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieves measurable results in the community.

The Corporation for National and Community Service, which has administered the Honor Roll since 2006, admitted a total of 641 college and universities for their impact on issues from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to supporting at-risk youth. Of that total, 511 were named to the Honor Roll, 114 received the recognitions of Honor Roll with distinction, 11 were identified as finalists, and six received the Presidential Award. Gena Glickman, President of Manchester Community College stated “It’s an honor to be recognized for our community engagement. We are fortunate to have an active service learning program with strong faculty leadership and community support.”

Manchester Community College has a long history of community engagement, including volunteerism, civic engagement, service learning, and cultural programming and support. During the 2009-2010 year, various disciplines including Culinary Arts, Communications, Computer Science, Health and Wellness and Sociology, participated in community engagement efforts. The College has taken significant steps to formalize its community service program, align it with the institutional mission and ensure its growth, consistency and sustainability.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College.
