MCC Host Community Gardens for Third Year

Manchester, CT-(July 7, 2011)… For the third year a parcel of land on the campus of Manchester Community College is being used for 39 community gardens. The Community Gardens, managed by the MCC Sustainability Committee, provide learning opportunities for students as an outdoor classroom as well as a community resource to area residents who enjoy the benefits of fresh vegetables and flowers.

There are recent improvements to the Community Gardens, including raised beds for handicapped access, an expanded gathering space in the shade and a new well for a more reliable water supply. The Community Gardens have received generous support from the Anna and Andrew Pac Fund managed by the Manchester Community College Foundation. A plaque on a garden bench dedicated to the Pac family reads:
“ May generations learn and grow in their memory”

Other donations to the MCC Foundation earmarked for the community garden have provided tools, supplies, a shed, an accessible comfort station and more. Future plans include an accessible cross walk, a composting toilet, solar power to run the well pump, a fence to surround the garden and furniture for the gathering space. The gardens are available on a first come, first served basis but the spaces are filled for this season.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. MCC is proud of its academic excellence, new facilities, flexible schedules, small classes, low tuition and faculty with both academic and “real world” credentials. The College offers over 60 programs, transfer options, financial aid and scholarships, as well as access to baccalaureate degrees through guaranteed admissions programs with several universities. MCC is situated on a park-like campus and is easily accessible from I-84.
