Manchester Community College to Participate in Breadville USA: Exploring Local Baking in America
Manchester, CT-(May 9, 2011)…Manchester Community College will be one of 53 participants in The Bread Bakers Guild of America’s international Bakery Open House on Saturday, June 25. Guild member bakeries in 25 US states, Canada and Ireland will take part in the open house, which is part of the Guild’s 2011 event series, Breadville USA: Exploring Local Baking in America.
This event was conceived as a way to bring communities to their bakeries, as well as to champion the cause for locally made bread. John Gibson, artisan bread maker and instructor at Manchester Community College, and his students’ will hold an open house at MCC on June 25 from 10:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m. in the kitchen of the Culinary Arts Center located on the second floor of the Lowe Student Services Center. Visitors will sample a wide variety of artisan breads, see techniques by which bread is made, ask questions about bread making, get recipes and tour the college’s Culinary Arts facility.
Manchester Community College is the only community college that is participating in this nation-wide event and only one of two places in the state of Connecticut to hold the Bakery Open House.
The MCC Hospitality Department has degree programs in Culinary Arts, Foodservice Management and Hotel-Tourism Management. The Culinary Arts program also offers a one-year certificate preparing students for a career in commercial food preparation, restaurant ownership or catering. The Professional Baker certificate program offers a one-year certificate for a career in commercial baking, or bakeshop ownership.
The Bread Bakers Guild of America is a non-profit organization comprised of professional bakers, farmers, millers, suppliers, educators, students, home bakers, technical experts and bakery owners and managers who work together to support the principle and the practice of producing the highest quality baked goods. It was formed in 1993 to shape the skills and knowledge of the artisan baking community through education.
Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College.
