MCC Gains Doubleheader Split with #4 Suffolk County CC
Holland Knocks in Game-Winner; Pitching Holds Up for Cougars
MANCHESTER – Kyle Holland (Montville) drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Manchester CC (7-18) gained a double-header split with a 5-4 win over #4 Suffolk County CC (23-8) Sunday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Sam Cooke (Meriden) stranded a pair of inherited runners in scoring position and picked up his second win of the season. Mike Methot (Bristol) struck out Matt LaRocca looking with the tying run at third base in the bottom of the seventh for his second save. LaRocca was 5 for 7 on the afternoon, with two doubles and two RBI.

Suffolk won the first game 2-1 behind Ray Angelucci (4-1), who allowed just two hits and struck out nine while pitching a complete game. MCC’s Kevin Bartlett (East Lyme) also threw a complete game, scattering five hits with four strikeouts and a walk, but was the tough-luck loser and fell to 0-4. Game two starter Brian Levchuk (Branford) pitched into the sixth inning for the Cougars while his counterpart, Jim Trimarchi (2-1), went the distance and took the loss.

MADERA NO-HITS ROXBURY
Lefty Strikes Out 15 in Region 21 Win
ROXBURY, MA – Kevin Madera (Newington) pitched a seven inning no-hitter with 15 strikeouts for Manchester CC (6-17, 2-1 Region 21 D III), who beat Roxbury CC 7-0 in the first game of a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon. Roxbury (3-10, 1-3) took the nightcap 6-2.

Madera (1-1), who was an NJCAA All-American as a freshman in 2010, has 50 strikeouts in 31 innings and a 0.87 ERA in six starts as a sophomore.

The lefty, who was an NJCAA DIII first team All-American last year, threw 99 pitches – 50 for strikes – and walked four, including the first batter of the game.

“He threw the ball very well and was ahead of most of the batters all day,” MCC head coach Chris Strahowski said. “Nothing hit hard – I believe one ball left the infield.”

Madera was aware of the no-hitter, but didn’t know if shortstop Jesse Sutherland was charged with an error on a routine grounder by Angel Pena after he had struck out two batters in the fifth. “I wasn’t sure, but I didn’t ask,” Madera said. The play was ruled an error and catcher Kyle Holland (Montville) promptly caught Pena to end the inning.

“He was on point and hitting his spots, both outside and inside and breaking it off a little bit too,” Holland, who helped his pitcher out with an RBI double in the second inning, said.

Of the 15 strikeouts, 11 were swinging and four looking. Madera walked a pair in the fourth – the only inning he did not fan a batter and struck out the side three times, including the seventh when they went down in order.
