CCRI Bullpen Holds Off MCC in 4-2 Victory
WEST WARWICK, RI – Manchester CC (5-12) loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not score as the CC of Rhode Island (11-5) bullpen held on for a 4-2 victory.
CCRI’s Roger Lincoln gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings to pick up the win. Brenden Cabral earned the save. A. J. Silberman (Meriden) had three singles, walked and scored a run for MCC.
CCRI scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed in the two-hour and five minute game. MCC cut the lead down to 2-1 when Silberman scored on a Chris Rivera (New Britain) fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth.
The Knight’s added single runs in the fifth and seventh but created a bit of drama in the final two frames. Reliever Jean Maldonado sandwiched a pair of two-out walks around a single to load the bases in the eighth but struck Rivera out swinging before turning the game over to Cabral in the ninth.
Cabral put himself in the same bases loaded two-out jam with two walks and a single, but got Silberman to ground out to second to end the threat and the game.
All four MCC pitchers threw the ball well but were supported by just six hits – all singles. Starter Kevin Bartlett (East Lyme) took the loss after working the first three innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He was followed by Matt Niedzwiecki (Bristol) who went three innings (1R, 1H, 2K). Brian Levchuck (Branford) worked the eighth (1R,1H) and Tyler Kapushinski (New Britain) threw a 1-2-3 ninth.
The trio of CCRI pitchers had just three strikeouts combined, but induced ten fly ball outs. Alec Brown (Montville) had two singles and seven putouts at first base for the Cougars.
