Season Ends Quietly For MCC Men
SOMERVILLE, MA – Marion Quijada scored three goals for Bunker Hill CC (8-4) who beat defending champion Manchester CC (11-6-2) 6-2 in the Region 21, Division III title game Sunday afternoon at Dilboy Stadium.
Sophomore Giuseppe Panajia (Glastonbury) had a goal and an assist for the Cougars. Bunker Hill moves on to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in Herkimer, NY Nov. 11-14.
MCC was playing in the Region 21 championship game for the eighth consecutive season and have won the title six times during head coach Jim Insinga’s 11-year tenure.
Quijada scored his first goal three minutes into the game, then gave BHCC a 2-0 lead at the 13 minute mark. Panajia scored his team leading 11th goal of the year three minutes later, sending the Cougars into the half trailing 2-1.
A Briama Samati goal gave Bunker Hill a 3-1 lead in the 69th minute, but MCC’s Dan Mizura (Plainville) brought the Cougars to within one goal in the 72nd minute. Bunker Hill put the game out of reach with three unanswered goals over a 12-minute span and captured their first-ever Region 21 soccer championship.
