MCC Rebounds from Tough Road Loss Friday to Sweep Nothern Essex at Home Saturday

MANCHESTER, CT – A. J. Lowers (Newington) was 5 for 8 and drove in eight runs in Manchester CC’s double-header sweep of Northern Essex CC Saturday afternoon at MCC.
MCC won the first game 13-9 and the second 10-0. Kevin Madera (Newington) threw a five inning shutout in the second game before the Mercy Rule was applied after 4 1/2 innings. Madera allowed two hits and struck out seven while improving to 5-0 on the season.
Lowers, who was an NJCAA Division III All-American as a freshman in 2009, was 3 for 4 with four RBi in game one, and 2 for 3 in the shortened second game with four RBI. Lowers also scored four runs on the day.
Alec Brown (Groton) helped MCC (13-11) gain a 7-1 lead with a three-run homerun in the first inning of game one, but Northern Essex (0-12) tied it up at 7-7 in the top of the fifth. Manchester pulled away with a six run sixth, making a winner out Taylor Riley, who pitched one inning in relief. Brown’s homer, which curled around the foul pole to the opposite field in right, was his team leading third of the year.
Manchester had 26 hits over the two games in its first Region 21 Division action of the season. MCC will host another Region 21 game Monday afternoon when Quinsigamond CC visits for a 3:30pm make-up game.
Friday:
FRANKLIN, MA -Dean College (9-2) scored seven times in the second inning and cruised to an 11-1 victory over Manchester CC (11-11) Saturday afternoon in Franklin, MA.
Casey Cotter, Dan Arsenault and Bryan Bolton each homered for Dean and Mike Mancini scattered five hits over six innings for the victory.
A. J. Lowers was 3 for 3 and scored the lone MCC run on a Vin Sommo RBI single in the top of the second inning. Luis Sanchez struck out the side – all looking – in the bottom of the fifth for the Cougars, who will host Northern Essex for a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1pm. the game was originally scheduled to be played in Haverhill, MA, but was moved due to unplayable fields.
