Monroe College Holds on to Beat MCC 5-4

MCC’s A.J. Lowers connected for a two-run triple to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning, but Monroe College scored a run in the sixth and hung on for a 5-4 victory.

MANCHESTER – MCC tied the game at 4-4 on A. J. Lowers (Newington) two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Monroe College (4-5) scratched out a run in the top of the sixth and held on to win Thursday afternoon’s non-region game 5-4 in the first game played at McCormick field in 2010. MCC’s previous 11 home games were played at Cheney Tech.

Vin Sommo (Clinton) continued to swing a hot bat, going 3 for 4, including a pair of crushed doubles and Ryan Carroll (Newington), Justin Thomas (East Lyme) and Mike Methot (Bristol)combined to retire the final eight Mustang hitters for MCC. Monroe (4-5) starter Gregory Downing struck out seven over six innings and picked up the win while Jeffery Hostos worked the final three for the save. Juan Bisono (New Britain) had an RBI single and scored a run for MCC (8-8).

“Our pitchers threw lots of strikes,” MCC head coach Chris Strahowski said. “We needed a day to get the relievers some work and the starters needed a little work for the weekend.” Tyler Kapuchinski (New Britain), Kevin Madera (Newington) and Tyler Wenz (Ogdensburg, NJ) all saw action on the mound against NJCAA Division I Monroe, who may be the toughest opponent the Cougars face this season.

Strahowski cited Sommo for “doing a great job in the off season.” The 6’3″ DH/1B “has been putting more breaking balls in play with authority. He has already doubled his walk total from last season and will only get better as the season progresses,” according to Strahowski.

MCC will travel to New Jersey Saturday morning for its lone regular season over-night trip. The Cougars are scheduled to play a pair of double headers; against Brookdale CC in Lincroft, NJ Saturday and Mercer County CC Sunday in Trenton, NJ.
