The Summer Excursions In Learning Programs at MCC

Manchester, Conn., – (July 24, 2009)…Investigating the mysteries of electricity or running a business from start to finish are not the typical things kids do at summer camp. But that’s exactly some of the things students are doing this summer in the Summer Excursions in Learning program at MCC.

Over 280 students in grades K-8 participate in this summer enrichment program, designed to give gifted and high-achieving students an opportunity to explore a wide-variety of topics through active and authentic learning. Students get the chance to experiment with technology, sharpen their culinary skills and solve complex problems, in a fun environment on a college campus. “Students are re-discovering how much fun it is to learn a new topic or explore new interests,” stated Susan Meisler, coordinator of Excursions in Learning. “Having the program at MCC gives students access to a wonderful space where they can learn in a creative and open environment.”

Students have the option to select from 48 courses offered within a two-week session. Courses range in topics and interests from “Computer Game Design and Programming,” to “Exploring Art through Nature.” Meisler believes the summer enrichment program is important to keep kids engaged in learning during school vacation. “Throughout the year, we are working with educators and parents to ensure we are offering courses that are relevant and fun,” stated Meisler.
