Seven-run sixth inning lifts Cougars in 14-11 win over ECSU
MANCHESTER – (April 27, 2009) Peter Burgio (Bolton) had three hits, including a pair of doubles three runs scored and two RBI’s as MCC outlasted Eastern Connecticut’s sub-varsity Monday afternoon in Manchester.
Rob Brown (Burlington) picked up his first win of the season after throwing 4 1/3 innings of relief as the Cougars won for the 20th time this season.. Dave Alexander (Torrington) had a single, double and a triple. Herb Coggeshall (Coventry) had two singles, stole a base and scored three times.
MCC (20-13-1) took a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning but ECSU scored six unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. MCC tied it up at 7-7 all in the fifth when Alexander drove in Burgio with an RBI single and the Cougars exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brown survived Eastern’s comeback attempt and was helped out by catcher James McGowan (South Windsor) who gunned down Justin Proctor attempting to steal second with nobody out in the ninth.
Manchester took the series from the SubV Warriors (7-14), winning four of the five contests in non-league play. The Cougars host NJCAA Division I Monroe College Tuesday afternoon on the MCC campus at 3:30pm. The Mustangs of Monroe handed MCC it’s only tie of the season on March 31st in Fishkill, NY.
