HOLYOKE, MA – (October 15) Christine Amat (Glastonbury) scored 20 minutes into the game off a Brittany Finger (Enfield) pass and Nicole Morehouse (Tolland) made 16 saves as the MCC Women’s soccer team beat Holyoke CC 1-0 Wednesday afternoon in a Region XXI, Division III game in Holyoke.
Sweeper Julia Connor (Ellington) saved a ball from going into the net early on to keep game scoreless before Amat scored her third and by far, biggest goal of the season. “Julia did a great job as always,” MCC Coach Alex Calpa said of the 2007 NJCAA Region XXI First Team All-Star. “Betsy (Whalen, Avon), Angeline (Chiang, Granby) and Julia were the anchors of the defense.”
Morehouse, who was also a member of the NJCAA Region XXI First Team in 2007, completed her fifth shutout of the season and lowered her Goals Against Average to 0.792. “Nicole did a nice job,” Calpa said. “She made a phenomenal save in the second half on a ball heading toward the far post and organized the defense well.”
Finger added to her team leading total with her 10th assist of the season and now has 38 points (14 goals), all team highs.
The Cougars (12-2) bounced back from a tough 2-0 loss in Brockton, MA against Region XIII rival Massasoit CC on Monday and completed a stretch of five games over eight days that resulted in three wins and a pair of losses. The Cougars play a pair of home games this weekend vs. Baltimore Community College-Essex (Saturday at 1 pm) and Dean College (Sunday at 12 PM).
