MCC Administrator Recipient of State-wide Service Award

Manchester, CT – (April 14, 2008)… Dr. G. Duncan Harris, associate dean of academic affairs at Manchester Community College, was recently honored and named Special Award Recipient at the 2008 Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Awards held in April.

The annual Community Service Awards are co-sponsored by the Connecticut Commission on Community Service and the Connecticut Department of Higher Education. Recipients are selected based on their ability to create projects that distinctly help individuals or community groups, incorporate originality and unique approaches to community service, substantially raise student participation and address community problems. The awards were presented by Commissioner of Higher Education Michael P. Meotti together with State Representative William R. Dyson.

Dr. Harris was honored for his work with Alpha Academy, a mentoring program at the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Hartford. The Alpha Academy connects college student mentors from Wesleyan University and Trinity College with male 5th and 6th graders on a weekly basis. The mission of Alpha Academy is to assist young men from the greater Hartford area -in their mental, physical, and spiritual development-to avoid potential pitfalls and position themselves to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them now and in the future.

Dr. Harris of Windsor has worked at MCC for 12 years and has been involved in various aspects of the college. Harris holds a doctorate of education from the Fischler Graduate School of Education at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, a master of science degree in counseling from Central Connecticut State University and a bachelor of science degree in economics from the University of Connecticut.
