Marcus Named NJCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Player of the Week
MANCHESTER, Conn. (Sept. 20) – Manchester Community College sophomore midfielder Jacob Marcus (NORWICH) has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 10-16.
Marcus, a 2005 NJCAA Division III All-Region XXI midfielder, had two goals and one assist for the nomination period. He scored the game-winning goal against Massasoit Community College, then ranked No. 10 in the NJCAA Division I poll, on an 18-yard shot to the lower left of the net 2:38 into overtime. Marcus tied the score at 1 on a 10-yard shot to the lower left in the second half at 52:00. With the 3-2 win, MCC also broke a four-game losing streak to Massasoit CC, dating back to the 2002 season.
The 5-foot-7 Marcus, a 2005 graduate of Norwich Free Academy, recorded an assist in an 8-0 win over Springfield Technical Community College on Sept. 13.
In a 1-1 tie against the Community College of Rhode Island on Tuesday, Marcus scored on a three-yard header. He has recorded at least one point in each of his last four games and is third on the team in scoring with 10 points (four goals, two assists).
Marcus has joined former forward Alverson Sargusingh and current Southern Connecticut State University forward Colin Jackson (HARTFORD) as NJCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Player of the Week winners from MCC since 2004.
No. 6 nationally-ranked Manchester Community College (4-0-1 overall), off to its best start in seven seasons under coach Jim Insinga, travels to MassBay Community College in Framingham, Mass., for a 1 p.m. NJCAA Division III Region XXI game Saturday. The Cougars have reached the NJCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament quarterfinals three out of the past four years (2002, ’04, ’05).
