Community Invited to Attend Course on MCC
Manchester, CT – (August 14, 2006) . . . Members of the community, including public educators, members of school boards, policy makers, adjunct faculty, MCC alumni and members of the Older Adult Association are invited to attend, What is Manchester Community College Really About? a six-session professional development course led by Dr. Jonathan M. Daube, President of Manchester Community College.
Almost half of all U.S. undergraduates are enrolled in community college. The diverse array of presenters will discuss the ins and outs of Manchester Community College, specifically the make-up of the college and its student body, the connection between the community college and public schools, the future of the college and how it is perceived in the community.
The course begins on Wednesday, September 20, with Duncan Harris, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and David Nielsen, Director of Planning, Research and Assessment. They will discuss who the students are at MCC, where they come from and where they are going.
On Wednesday, October 4, “How Does MCC Connect with the Public Schools?” and “What About Great Path Academy” will be presented by Dr. Thomas Danehy, Principal of Great Path Academy, and Marcia Jehnings, Director of MCC’s Social Science and Hospitality Division.
On Wednesday, October 18, MCC alumni Lucy Hurston, Assistant Professor of Sociology and author; Glenn Lemaire, Professor of Hospitality and Culinary Arts; Florence Sheils, Director of the Center for Student Development; and Rae Strickland, Assistant Professor of English, will discuss “What’s It Like Inside MCC.”
Melanie Haber, Dean of Continuing Education, and Eileen Stern, Director of Business and Industry Services, will discuss “Workforce Development and the Credit-Free Side” on Wednesday, November 1.
On Wednesday, November 15, “How Do the Legislature and Public At-Large View MCC? What Is Its Mission? What Should It Be?” will be presented by David Blackwell, Esq., member of the Board of Trustees of Community-Technical Colleges, former State Representative and MCC alumnus, and Melody Currey, Mayor of East Hartford and former Deputy Speaker of the State House of Representatives.
Dr. Jonathan M. Daube, President of MCC, along with the previous presenters will discuss the topic, “A look Into the Future,” on Wednesday, November 29.
The course is offered through MCC’s Continuing Education Division and will be held in the Learning Resource Center room A108 on Wednesday, September 20; Wednesday, October 4; Wednesday, October 18; Wednesday November 1; Wednesday, November 15; and Wednesday, November 29 from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
