Clint Mitchell Named First-Team NJCAA Division III Baseball All-American
MANCHESTER, Conn. (May 23) – Manchester Community College sophomore center fielder Clint Mitchell (WINDSOR) was named a 2006 first-team National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Baseball All-American.
“Clint had a fantastic season at the plate and in the field,” seventh-year coach Chris Strahowski said. “He was a catalyst as our leadoff hitter, both scoring runs and driving in runs (22). I wish Clint had another year of eligibility left. He will be missed.”
Mitchell, a 2006 first-team NJCAA Division III All-Region XXI outfielder, led MCC in batting average (.465), slugging percentage (.626), on-base percentage (.546), hits (46), total bases (62), walks (16) and runs scored (30). He stole seven bases and had a 1.000 fielding percentage in 66 opportunities (52 putouts, 14 assists).
The 5-foot-8 Mitchell had at least one hit in 14 out of his last 15 games, including tying freshman second baseman Steve Kelley (GLASTONBURY) with a team-high nine-game hitting streak from April 15-30. Over that 15-game span, he hit .560 (28-for-50) with 17 runs scored and 13 RBIs. Mitchell had a team-best 17 multi-hit games, two more than freshman shortstop Aaron Granahan (THOMASTON).
Mitchell joined former MCC outfielders Stan Lewandowski (2002, third team) and Dustin Fredieu (2003, second team) and third baseman Shane Legare (2005, third team) as NJCAA Division III All-Americans under Strahowski.
A transfer from Community College of Rhode Island, Mitchell is Manchester Community College’s third NJCAA Division III All-American for the 2005-06 academic year. He shares All-America status with sophomore forward Colin Jackson (HARTFORD) and freshman midfielder Lamar Chancey (MERIDEN) from the men’s soccer team, a 2005 NJCAA Division III tournament quarterfinalist.
The Cougars (19-11 final record) had a season-high eight-game winning streak from March 26-April 7 and reached the NJCAA Division III Region XXI Baseball Tournament for the sixth straight season.
