Weather Causes NJCAA Division III Region XXI Baseball Tournament Schedule to Change
MANCHESTER, Conn. (May 12) – Rain and unplayable field conditions have caused the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XXI Baseball Tournament schedule to change.
The four-team, double-elimination tournament, originally scheduled to begin on Friday, now begins on Saturday with two games at McCormick Field on the campus of Manchester Community College. Host and fourth-seeded MCC (18-11 overall, 8-4 NJCAA Division III Region XXI) will meet top-seeded Holyoke Community College (22-19, 13-2) at noon. Second-seeded Northern Essex Community College (18-7, 11-3) will play third-seeded Massasoit Community College (23-20, 9-4) at 4 p.m.
The tournament continues on Sunday with three games at McCormick Field. The Holyoke Community College-Manchester Community College loser will play the Northern Essex Community College-Massasoit Community College loser at 9 a.m. The Holyoke Community College-MCC winner will meet the Northern Essex Community College-Massasoit Community College winner at 12:30 p.m. The winner of the losers’ bracket game at 4 p.m. receives the second berth into the championship round on Monday. The site and times for the championship round on Monday are to be determined.
There will be no games at Northwest Park on Saturday and Sunday as the field is unplayable.
The NJCAA Division III Region XXI champion advances to the 2006 NJCAA Division III Baseball Championship May 20-26 in Glens Falls, N.Y.
Sophomore center fielder Clint Mitchell (WINDSOR) leads MCC with a .463 batting average, .621 slugging percentage, .548 on-base percentage, 44 hits, 59 total bases, 16 walks and 29 runs scored. Freshman utility player Jason Banks (STAFFORD SPRINGS) has a team-high 31 RBIs. Both freshman shortstop Aaron Granahan (THOMASTON) and sophomore catcher Josue Lopez (MANCHESTER) are hitting .414.
Manchester Community College has won four of its last five games entering the tournament. MCC is 1-1 against Massasoit Community College, 0-1 against Northern Essex Community College and 0-2 against Holyoke Community College in 2006.
